A second family in retirement: The power of ARFA connections

When Rudy Gomez Jr.’s wife, Barbara, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he devoted himself fully to her care — until he learned the importance of caring for himself, too. Through the Health Science Center’s Association of Retired Faculty and Associates, Rudy found connection, support and renewed purpose during an incredibly challenging time.
That connection ultimately led him to care through the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, giving his family meaningful moments of joy and comfort. Now ARFA’s 18th president, Rudy’s journey as a “caregiver survivor” highlights the power of staying engaged, supporting one another and remaining connected to the Health Science Center community — even after retirement.
