Dr. Sullivan’s research investigates gaps in the detection, diagnosis and care for those with dementia syndromes, especially those from diverse backgrounds or those with young-onset or atypical dementia syndromes. She oversees two primary projects: the Biggs longitudinal clinical studies and a tailored caregiver support program. With respect to the first, Dr. Sullivan serve as the Clinical Core PI for the NIA-designated South Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (STAC ADRC) and site PI for ALLFTD. Both studies follow individuals across the disease spectrum, ranging asymptomatic ‘cognitively healthy’ participants to those with advanced dementia. Each study emphasizes thoughtful recruitment and assessment of the culturally and linguistically diverse South Texas population. The South Texas ADRC encompasses three sites stretching from San Antonio to the Texas/Mexico border, and Dr. Sullivan leads a large team that strives for accurate and culturally-sensitive data collection. Dr. Sullivan also oversees the Biggs Care Ecosystem, a comprehensive, evidenced-based telephone- and internet-based supportive care intervention designed to deliver remote care from care team navigators and licensed specialists with expertise in dementia care. The Care Ecosystem is available to caregivers navigating difficult dementia syndromes and those dealing with a recent dementia diagnosis.
