The San Antonio Heart and Mind Study
Advancing the Legacy from the San Antonio Heart Study and the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging
Participants of the San Antonio Heart Study (1979-1996) and the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging (SALSA, 1992-2004) are invited to build upon the invaluable knowledge gained from these previous studies by joining the San Antonio Heart and Mind Study.
Participation from these previous studies helped us uncover valuable insights into:
- Important factors that contribute to healthy aging
- Diabetes risk factors and prevention
- How lifestyle impacts health
- Heart disease risk factors and prevention
The San Antonio Heart and Mind Study continues the legacy of earlier research efforts, now focusing on understanding the keys to healthy brain aging in our community.

By participating, you will help us:
Evaluate cardiovascular and brain health in our community,
guiding efforts to improve well-being as people age.
Study early blood markers of abnormal brain aging,
matching patients to the best treatments against dementia.
Understand the impact of our environment on the brain,
empowering our community with actionable knowledge.
Contribute unique data from our community,
filling gaps in medical research and benefiting from scientific breakthroughs.
Participation
Participation includes:
- Memory and thinking tests
- Physical, cardiovascular and neurological health assessments
- Blood draw
- Standard brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
- Wearing a watch and taking your blood pressure for a week to monitor your heart health at home
Participation also includes two optional specialized assessments: a lumbar puncture and a brain positron emission tomography (PET) scan.
All the assessments are voluntary. Participants can join the study even if not all components can be completed.
To be eligible to participate in this study, you must have participated in the San Antonio Heart Study (1979-1996) and the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging (SALSA, 1992-2004).
Join this groundbreaking study to improve the future of heart and brain health!
