Sleep Issues – Efficacy and Sensitivity of Technological Assessments (SIESTA) Study

Sleep disturbances are common early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Identifying sleep disturbances can help diagnose individuals at risk for Parkinson’s or in the early stages of the disease.

To provide easier, convenient testing in the future, this study will evaluate if at-home devices, like the FitBit, can detect these sleep disturbances in Parkinson’s with similar accuracy as a clinic-based sleep study.

Participants will:

  • Complete a 3-hour visit at UT Health San Antonio and an overnight sleep sleep study
  • Use a Fitbit, sleep monitoring headband (Dreem Headband) and an under the mattress sleep monitoring device (EM Fit) for 4-weeks at home
  • Keep a sleep diary for 4-weeks

Eligibility:

  • Diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease
  • Have a study partner that is knowledgeable about participant’s sleep habits

Participants may continue to take Parkinson’s medications that promote dopamine, such as Cabidopa/Levodopa, during the study.

There is no cost to participate. Participants will be compensated for their time.
