At UT Health San Antonio, we recognize that care for a person with a chronic illness or disability is not complete without addressing the needs of the caregiver. Focusing on caregivers of a person with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, our program aims to improve the quality of life for family caregivers and those they care for with evidence-based services, support, education and research with value on the caregiver’s health, skills and resilience.
The Caring for the Caregiver program focuses on:
- Educational training for each stage of care, including new diagnosis for caregivers and patients, behavioral management, advance planning, transitioning to long-term care and grief and loss support
- Hands-on skills training
- Peer support training
- Facilitated support groups by health care professionals
