World-Class Facilities
The Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Disease
The Biggs Institute is dedicated to helping cultivate future leaders in behavioral neurology and dementia care.
The institute is one of 33 centers in the nation and the only one in Texas recognized as a National Institute on Aging (NIA)- designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
In addition, UT Health San Antonio has been designated a Parkinson’s Foundation Comprehensive Care Center, the first of its kind in the state of Texas.
The institute houses a cohort of distinguished professionals encompassing behavioral neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuropathologists, neuroimaging specialists, epidemiologists, geneticists and geriatricians.
Precision medicine, comprehensive multidisciplinary care, caregiver support and person-centered management are available to patients and their families.

The Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies
The Barshop Institute is the only such institute in the country to have four designations: two National Institute on Aging-funded centers (Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center), a testing site of the NIA-sponsored Interventions Testing Program and a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center.
The Research Imaging Institute
The mission of the Research Imaging Institute is to perform basic, clinical and translational research using noninvasive, biomedical imaging methods for measuring the structure and function of living organisms. Neuroscience research is given highest priority.
The institute is a research resource which maintains its own grant portfolio, while promoting collaborative projects that cross departmental and institutional boundaries.
It is operated as an “open door” laboratory, allowing ready access to investigators from other departments and institutions. Through this “open door” policy, it has developed an outstanding portfolio of inter-disciplinary, collaborative grants and a large and growing network of collaborators on a world-wide basis.
